I assure you! Following this guide, you will learn a language:

  • with 1 hour of your time daily
  • without studying
  • for free

Does it sound too good to be real? If it does, I don’t blame you. This guide is the opposite of what the school taught us about language learning.

How many people freely express themselves in a language because they’ve attended copious school lessons? Little. Meanwhile, lazy learners reap all the harvest.

I’ve already written an article about Krashen’s method, which remains my go-to way of learning languages. This time, to make things even more simple, you will get a complete step-by-step guide to fast and lazy language learning. Literally, just do this:

Download dual subtitles extension

This is a game-changer, especially for someone who doesn’t know English. Usually the content you are watching has subtitles only in a single language — either the one that you are learning or your own.

The standard single — language subtitle

That is a bummer because you can’t efficiently connect foreign words to their meaning.

The role of this extension is to display subtitles in the foreign language and their translation at the same time, so you can understand the message easily. I use this one and it works like this:

Real time translation from English to Russian

Now the video is much more comprehensible. The translation is surprisingly accurate.

Choose a channel based on the Comprehensible Input method

Now we need to look for a channel to be our main learning source for some time. Many people provide great language learning content free of charge on YouTube. Here are some of my picks to get you started:

🇫🇷 Alice Ayel, 🇪🇸 Spanish with Alma, Fabulaudit, 🇬🇧 Smile English stories, 🇷🇺 Maria Petrova, 🇨🇳 Comprehensible Chinese, 🇩🇪 Easy German, 🇯🇵 Onomappu , 🇸🇰 Learn Slovak with Stories, 🇮🇹 Italiano Automatico, 🇫🇮Finnished

Feel free to have a look for yourself, searching with this secret formula:

[language being learned] + “Comprehensible Input”

Use the dual subtitle extension for channels with single — language subtitles. Watch every video as much as you need, in order to understand it without the subtitles. To achieve significant results, dedicate 1 hour daily for just that.

Sail onto the high seas of content

When you already understand much of what other people are saying, transition to watching and consuming whatever you like. That will make you accustomed to the “real world” of the language.

If you’ve learned Finnish, you can watch this instructional video

It is so rewarding to suddenly get access to so many new videos, articles and podcasts!

Start speaking

When you understand the speech, you can start to speak. Here, it is just a matter of practice, you pretty much know the language already! It’s best if you have someone to talk with.

If you can’t meet with a person who speaks your target language, talk with someone online. You can use some kind of paid service, like “italki”. Basic video chat works fine too. Polish your speaking until

Congratulations! You’ve learned the language! 🎉

Conclusion

As you see, learning a language is not complicated. Great possibilities await people willing to dedicate a little of their time.

Choose a language and look for available YouTube channels utilizing the Comprehensible Input method. Remember about the dual subtitles.

When you get better, consume content from the “real world”.

When you understand the speech, speak yourself.

When you get good with speaking …

… choose another language 🙂
